The vow of a navigator that became a symbol for Alghero.

The Origins:
Born from the will of a Genoese merchant as thanks for the protection received at sea, the church represents an unbreakable bond between the community and the Madonna. A symbol of hope jealously guarded among the centuries-old olive trees of Alghero.
Today it welcomes believers and visitors seeking serenity, keeping intact the authentic charm of the past and the sacredness of its ancient stone walls.
The History
A story of devotion tied to Sardinia.
1370
The Legend
The discovery of the crate at sea and the arrival of the statue of the Madonna protecting all navigators.
The story begins with a shipwreck off Cagliari in 1370. A crate thrown into the sea miraculously washed ashore, revealing inside the statue of the Virgin holding a vessel.
From that moment she became the protector of sailors, venerated throughout the island and inspiring the construction of our small country church.
1815
The Foundation
The birth of the temple in Alghero to honor a sacred vow made by a merchant devoted to the Virgin.
Centuries later, a Genoese navigator chose this olive grove to build the small church. A gesture of deep gratitude for the safe journeys made in Sardinia under the Madonna’s protective gaze.
Tenute Bonaria took its name from this place of worship, quickly becoming a spiritual and historical reference point for the entire city.
1940
The War
A beacon of hope and welcome for the people of Alghero during the difficult and sad years of World War II.
During the world conflict, the parish moved here. The small church became a safe haven for displaced families, offering religious and human comfort among the olive trees of the Alghero countryside.
Even today, the walls tell stories of solidarity and faith, witnessing how this place protected the soul of the community in the darkest moments.
